The Lewisham Pensioners Gazette

The Lewisham Pensioners Gazette is a small local charity whose principal activity is the production and distribution of a quarterly newspaper. The paper is produced by and for pensioners, and represents an independent voice for expressing their ideas and informing them about specific issues both national and local, and has done this since 1984.

We encourage maximum interaction with our readership by holding regular events throughout the borough to meet our readers, understand their views and capture their stories. Our directors and volunteers are actively involved in pensioner organisations. We frequently join in pensioner activities and events across the borough. These interactions provide a rich source of material for articles in the paper. We work together with our readers to tell their stories.

Lewisham Pensioners' Gazette

The paper is distributed free to pensioners via a network of organisations that have a high level of interaction within them. These include: Age Concern, Bingo Halls, Bowls Clubs, Chemists, Churches, Community Halls, Dentists, Doctors Surgeries, Lewisham Hospital, Lewisham Theatre, libraries, Meals on wheels, Lewisham Pensioners’ Forum, Public Houses (mainly Wetherspoons), Salvation Army, Sheltered Housing facilities, Supermarkets, and anywhere likely to service the needs of pensioners.

The paper cannot survive without the active participation of Lewisham pensioners. We need volunteer members with a passion for writing to join our friendly editorial team, we also need volunteers with a moderate level of computer literacy to help maintain and develop the organisation towards a sustainable future.

Lewisham Pensioners' Gazette

In order to ensure your copy as soon as it is available you can become a subscriber/member for just £6 per annum (or 4 copies) and this will entitle you to influence the annual vote for our officers; something that members do not have to attend our AGM in order to do, although we welcome readers’ presence at all times. A posted quarterly copy of each issue could also make a nice gift to older family members who have moved away from the borough but would still like to maintain an interest.

As an advertiser of local services we are aware that our readers can often be amongst the more vulnerable in society and therefore we encourage those who use our advertisers’ services to give us feedback. We also listen to our readers in order to develop an advertising policy that offers them a measure of reassurance that we vet our advertisers and would be prepared to mediate in the event of a dispute.

The Lewisham Pensioners’ Gazette a local charity providing an independent quarterly newspaper created by and for Lewisham Pensioners available from over 100 distribution points around the borough.

Our objective is to help readers maintain a quality independent life for as long as possible. We have no agenda except to print what our readers want to share.  Our readers find the mixture of features, news and views along with information and carefully selected advertisers both entertaining and informative.

If readers have an issue to raise or a story to tell, they can have full public credit or total anonymity it is up to them.  We will even help them write it.  If they have enjoyed our paper or acted on information in it we ask them to please tell us because it demonstrates our value and effectiveness which helps attract new sponsorship to replace Comic Relief’s, which expires in March 2014.

Please write to us c/o VAL, 120 Rushey Green, London SE6 4HQ or phone James 020 8690 4038 or Maureen on 020 8690 5324 or email: editor@lpgazette.org or contact us if you would like to advertise, distribute, donate, sponsor, subscribe or volunteer with us.  We believe that we have a positive effect on over 15,000 lives with each issue.

Advertising
As an advertiser of local services we are aware that our readers can often be amongst the more vulnerable in society and therefore we encourage readers who use our advertisers’ services to give us feedback. The interests of our readers including their input are paramount to how we shape the organisation’s strategy.

The most recent being the reformation of our advertising policy to offer a measure of reassurance that we vet our advertisers and would be prepared to mediate in the event of a dispute. You can help us and your fellow pensioners by recommending us as an effective medium to advertise local businesses from whom you have had particularly good service.
